My inspiration

Upon my first trip to Karbala, Iraq in 2014, for my very first pilgrimage to the shrine of Imam Hussein, son of Ali Ibna Abi Taleb and grandson of the Holy Prophet of Islam, Mohammad peace and blessings be upon them, I was met with a an idea that has transfixed my heart and soul ever since. For I was told in a whisper while tears ran down my guides cheek, that I now stood upon the sacred site where the very angel’s descend and weep at the feet of the great saint enshrined within the mausoleum. I cannot attest that on that day I witnessed heavenly angels, but I stood there and photographed thousands and tens of thousands of human angels who’s hearts were filled with love and sorrow and who poured through the sacred doors, weeping and walking as though their feet but skimmed the ground. I learned at the end of that mesmerising day, that day of Arbaeen (fortieth) that 27 million pilgrims had traversed the path that I came to know as the Hurum of Imam Hussein in that one day. My heart was captured, I gave it willingly, and so I have returned every year since 2014 to photograph and pay homage to Imam Hussein and the millions that come to visit his shrine during the Holy Arbaeen. It has been my life’s honour that I give back every year with my “portraits of the Arbaeen” project. A project that has enabled me to capture over 100 thousand portraits that I post online for the subject to find and keep without paying a cent.
